Follow this recipe to make sure that you have latest patches on your home system.
Go to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and click on pick updates to install. Apply all patches that are under critical updates and service packs.

You will also find several patches under Windows XP category, driver updates category etc. These you may want to apply as well but the critical ones need to get on the system asap.
Please read the documentation on the patch before applying any patch.
